When it comes to smart mobility we do not mean “only” sustainable mobility, nor do we simply want to refer to means of transport that are particularly advanced from a technological point of view. These two aspects converge in the smart mobility, they coexist, indeed, collaborate, they are often functional to the other with interesting results for users.
The lucky users who today are a very small percentage in the world and not comparable with the mass of people who are more "victim" or "slave" of means of transport due to low efficiency of many structures. And if in Europe, and in Italy, we often complain, in other countries the situation is even more disastrous impacts on the local and global economy.
Smart mobility: meaning
Smart mobility is one “citizen-friendly” mobility, highly technological and with low environmental impact. It is a present and future term and concept, a frontier to be explored and on which to invest energy and resources, both mental and financial, if possible. Smart mobility provides for actions to reduce pollution and waste but at the same time increase transport efficiency. It is based on the creation of economies of scale on the movement of people and goods, aims to improve logistics with the use of technology that allows us to save time and costs.
A modern and efficient mobility it means easy travel and therefore a much better quality of life than today. At the same time, smart mobility pushes for one ecological breakthrough of people and means. If you move intelligently, you arrive earlier and pollute less.
Smart mobility and technology
There technology is one of the two pillars of smart mobility, without it talking about sustainable and at the same time efficient mobility is a real utopia. Technology makes it possible to create travel and travel planning systems, for example route optimization, ad hoc programs for intermodal transport, systems that allow payment or booking on the move.
Then there are technologies Car-to-Car Communication (C2C) and Car-to-Infrastructure (C2I), going more specifically, and also in Italy there are integrated management systems for car sharing, bike sharing, van sharing.
Smart mobility: services
On the one hand, the technology must be useful for reducing waste and harmful emissions, and in general the environmental impact of transport, on the other hand also aimed at provide useful services for the citizen, for us citizens.
Smart mobility services must not be an end in themselves but aimed at make transfers more liveable, in town or between town. This means not only more efficient and green public transport but also road and bicycle travel, as well as pedestrian.
Let's not forget one aspect that cannot be overlooked at all: the security. Smart mobility must also take this into account when innovating.
Smart mobility: startups
In this field of action, which combines new technologies and respect for the environment, many new and emerging realities are moving together with the big giants. The startups that offer smart mobility solutions or services there are numerous, abroad but also in Italy, the best were the protagonists of a whole day last Mobility Conference held in early 2018 in Milan.
Smart mobility and smart city
Not only by assonance, smart mobility and smart city are two concepts that go hand in hand. It goes without saying that a smart city must also have smart roads and means of transport. This term, “smart”, now used as parsley and for this reason not very credible, at first glance, is instead an important label to distinguish in which direction we are going. In the field of mobility as in that of work, with the smart working, furniture and architecture, with the smart home, and so on.
The smart cities in a certain sense they can be seen as containers of many smart practices, it is not entirely a wrong idea but it is not entirely true either. If you want to deepen other aspects of smart cities, you can do it at this one dedicated link.
