Commonly calledpear quinceorquince, its botanical name isCydonia oblongaand belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is native to Asia Minor and is grown in our gardens both for ornamental purposes - for its beautiful flowers - and asfruit treefor the production ofQuinceorpears quinces, based on the shape of the fruit.

Quince: tree

Thequinceit's atreedeciduous (it loses its leaves in winter), small in size: it rarely exceeds 5 meters in height. It is perfect fromcultivatein the garden or in the low maintenance orchard as we are talking about a very rustic and resistant plant.

It has a tendentially globular crown but when the plant does not undergo any pruning, it can grow bushy. The main trunk is brown in color while the branches are even darker and covered with a light down only in the early years ofcultivation.

Quince: flowers

THEflowersthey are very popular: remember that it is part of the Rosaceae family and features five-petaled white or slightly pink roses. THEquince flowersthey sprout, solitary, at the peak of the small buds of the year. When pruning it is good to remember that the quince plant produces flowers and fruits on the youngest shoots.

The leaves are oval or elliptical, the small one is short and hairy. They have a very intense color and develop alternately along all the branches.

Pear quince or quince

As stated, the quince (Cydonia oblonga) is called by the names of quinceorpear quince. The reason? How to graft the quince?
The rootstock should be pollarded about 50 cm from the ground. On the cut, clean, you will have to make incisions so as to insert two or three slips. Be sure to choose scions with at least three or four buds each.
