Bacterial patina in the marine aquarium: how to eliminate it. I'll explain how to remove the white and oily patina that generally remains suspended on the surface of the marine aquarium. Immediate advice and how to prevent it from forming and lower nitrate levels at the same time.

Patina on the surface of the aquarium, how is it formed?

It is abacterial film created by the aggregation of a good number of microorganisms and the synthesis of their metabolism. In essence, it is an almost oily film that can often entrap air bubbles and cover the surface of the aquarium. This phenomenon is very common in the freshwater and marine aquariums. It is absolutely normal and is generally the consequence of poor water circulation.

Thereoily patina, better definedbacterial film, it is normal in the maturation phase of a marine aquarium, when the bacteria have not yet colonized the live rocks and aggregate on the surface where the water is more still.

Bacterial patina in the marine aquarium, how to eliminate it

First of all, you need to ensure good movement of the water. Generally, inmarine aquarium, the movement of the water is ensured by one or more fans (movement pump) and by the filter output (the pump leaving the water coming from the filter or from the sump). The circulation of the water allows a better work by the skimmer but make sure you have an adequate one.

Having an excellent skimmer is the first step to having clear and clean water. The skimmer assists the work done by the filter and by the bacteria of the live rocks themselves. Not all skimmers, however, are able to eliminate thebacterial patina of the aquarium.

How to remove the oily film

If your aquarium is in the ripening phase, do not perform any intervention, just make sure you have a good movement of the water, remove the oily patina from the surface of the aquarium simply by placing a sheet of paper on it and removing it immediately: the patina it will adhere to the sheet of paper and come off with it.

With this simple trick you can remove the oily film from the surface of the aquarium.

How to prevent bacterial patina from forming in the aquarium

As stated, by creating good water movement, you will avoid bacterial aggregations and give the skimmer and filter the opportunity to work better, drawing more water, without creating surface stagnation. If you don't have a skimmer, I strongly advise you to buy it!

Why the skimmer in the marine aquarium is important

The second thing to do is to adopt a skimmer capable of processing the proteins and also the same bacterial patina dispersed in the water so as to avoid its formation on the surface.

Which skimmer to buy? While it is possible to compromise with the quality of the glass and the filter, it is by no means possible to compromise with light and skimmer. I know that many of you will not have a skimmer in the sump or in the tank ... but I also know that this forces you to have a lot of water changes and puts the balance of your aquarium hanging by a thread! Each aquarium is an ecosystem in itself and creates its balance in a unique and fascinating way, however the skimmer, in my opinion, is an essential component, just like the lights.

The reason? I bet that if you try to move the bottom of your tank a little, a good number of accumulated residues will rise!

Good water recirculation, combined with good filtration and above all an excellent skimmer, will remove this problem and above all avoid the formation ofbacterial patinas and filamentsunsightly protruding from rocks.

The skimmer purifies the water by eliminating all the compounds resulting from the degradation of organic matter and the metabolism of all the organisms that populate your aquarium. The skimmer mechanically eliminates part of the compounds dispersed in the water before they enter the nitrogen cycle, preventing the formation of nitrites and nitrates.

Which skimmer to choose? Among the best on the market, best understood both as a relationshipquality pricethat as a filtering capacity of the water, I would like to point out the Tunze 9004 DC model (with digital adjustment of skimming). It can be bought on Amazon at the price of 176.10 euros. The same model, without digital adjustment of the skimming (but with the classic valve to turn) can be bought for about 140 euros. It is great foreliminate and prevent the formation of bacterial patina and white filaments in the aquarium.

For all information, I refer you to “this Amazon page“.

But be careful to size it appropriately! The skimmer that I have reported to you is suitable for "nano reef" or "cube" (ie very small) aquariums and for larger aquariums and embraces a capacity ranging from 60 to 300 liters. According to the manufacturer (the Tunze) it can be mounted both inside and outside the tank (both magnets for internal mounting and a stand for the external one come out in the package), however I do not recommend mounting it externally because its effectiveness decreases slightly.

Know that not all skimmers are able to process the white oily patina that forms on the surface of the marine aquarium, so always check the performance of the instrument you want to buy so as to invest your pennies well.
