THEwoods of Italythey are threatened by various dangers. Unauthorized activities of all kinds (illegal logging of trees, dumping of waste, various types of offenses) and fires are damaging the wooded areas of our country. It is necessary to act for the good of the community. It is for this reason that we will see todayhow to protect the woods.

How to protect the woods from fires

Summer 2017 will always be remembered as the summer of fires: in the first half of the summer season alone, 371 fires were recorded with more than 72,000 hectares going up in smoke. The figures were more alarming than in 2016 (and they were already tragic, just think that an area of 27,167 hectares was burned from 8 to 15 July 2016) and whoever has the power to do something will have to act.

The rules for saving woods from fires are all too simple:

  • Avoid lighting fires not only in the woods but also in the surrounding areas.
  • If you light a fire, before leaving, check that the embers are cold!
  • Never throw cigarette butts or lighted matches from the car.
  • In the event of a stop, check that the car's exhaust terminal does not come into contact with dry grass.
  • Notify the fire brigade (115) if you notice a fire, even a small one.
  • If you notice suspicious behavior (arsonists and criminals) immediately alert the Public Authorities (State Police, Carabinieri…).

Warning! The fires can be lit only in the points set up by the Park or in a special fireplace generally placed at least 50 meters from the treeline.

How to protect the woods from unauthorized use

Environmental crimes must be reported. A complaint can make the difference between pollution and environmental protection.

According to the administrative judge, the complaint of environmental damage which requires state intervention to protect the environment pursuant to art. 309 of Legislative Decree 152/2006 establishes an obligation for the Ministry of the Environment to "evaluate the requests for intervention and the observations attached to them relating to cases of damage or threat of environmental damage". This means that once the complaint is filed, they cannot ignore you.

If you are aware of an environmental crime, in addition to alerting the authorities it may be useful to make a complaint. The complaint is a document through which a citizen can report to the competent bodies the existence of a case of illegal damage to the environment or even cases of environmental pollution made lawful.

The complaint must be submitted:

  • To the mayor of the Municipality of reference
  • To the territorial ARPA
  • To the Public Prosecutor's Office
  • To the Prefect of the Province

The complaint does not allow anonymous reporting.

How to behave in a forest

Those who want to walk in the woods will have to follow simple rules that highlight respect for nature.

If you walk in the woods with a dog, it must be kept on a leash (it can scare wild animals). If you spot a wild animal yourself, do not approach it or try to provide it with food.

For no reason can you leave cigarette butts, papers or waste in the woods.

Keep away from nests, burrows, or holes. Do not raise your tone of voice and do not collect animals that have fallen from the nest. For all information on what to do and what not to do in the event of a puppy injured or fallen from the nest, read the articleRoe deer puppy, what to do

Some animals can be caught but always keeping in mind the regional regulation. For example, in the Piedmont Region, from 1 July to 30 November it is possible to catch frogs, while snails can only be collected from 1 September to 31 October.
